Makoto Azuma

Makoto Azuma (1976) is a Japanese artist who uses natural materials to make sculptures. In his work, we see conflict between both dynamic and static as well as hard and soft materials. Besides his installation art, Makoto also works closely with fashion designers such as Adidas on the presentation of their runway shows as well as on the design of certain pieces. At the same time, Makoto owns his own flower shop: Jardin des Fleurs in Tokyo.

During the exhibition Alter Nature: We Can (21.11.2010-13.03.2011), Makoto will show an existing work, ‘Shiki 1’, and a new piece specially created for the exhibition: ‘Frozen Bonsai’. ‘Shiki 1’ features a bonsai tree suspended from a metal frame. The frame represents the legal framework within which nature is manipulated, or to which these manipulations must comply. In ‘Frozen Bonsai’, Makoto sprays a bonsai tree with instant freeze and presents this in a specially designed fridge. As the ice slowly drains the colour from the bonsai tree, the tree dies – but its beauty is preserved in optimal conditions.
