Karl Philips

Karl Philips (1984) is a Belgian (h)activist, performance and conceptual artist who lives and works in Hasselt, Belgium. He is particularly interested in the margins of society, and those who move within. Not just their position, but their often creative pragmatism is what Philips finds fascinating. He focuses on themes such as gaps in legal, spatial, economic and social systems, the omnipresence of advertisement, unrestrained capitalism and consumerism, etc.,…

Biography of Karl Philips by Luc Lambrecht:

He is one of those rare young artists for whom commitment is not a hollow phrase. Like many people before him, he creates art in which militant commitment finds a ‘free’ outlet in the world of art. His work is of special value because his work commitment becomes life, with plentiful attention to those who “we” conveniently call “outcasts”.

In Mind the System, Find the Gap, Karl Philips presents ‘Renault Trafic’ (2011) as well as the new work entitled ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’, a Z33 production, with generous support from Dommelhof, Stad Hasselt, Kringwinkel SPIT, and Mobile Vikings
