Julien Berthier
Julien Berthier (1975) is a French artist who creates installations and sculptures, often in public spaces. He draws the viewer in by constantly approaching his themes with some form of humour and absurdity. At the same time, his work also provides sharp criticism on social trends in present-day society, such as the public–private debate. The difference between culture and nature are also regular features in his art, reflecting broader social themes.
During the exhibition Alter Nature: We Can (21.11.2010-13.03.2011), Berthier’s piece ‘Le Paradoxe de Robinson’ will be displayed on the pathway in front of Vleugel ’58. This work consists of a trailer with a palm tree that can be seen from the first floor of Vleugel ’58. The exotic connotation of a palm tree gives visitors the sense of summer holidays, even in the heart of winter.
