Franz West


Franz West started his artistic career in 1970, but only started his studies in 1977-1982 with Bruno Gironcoli at the ‘Akademie der Bildenden Kunste’ in Vienna. Soon after, he chose for installation and assemblage art. At first, he worked mainly with papier-mache, later also with polyester and aluminium. He exhibited his Paßstücke for the first time in the 1980’s. After that he also experimented with furniture, such as sofas and chairs, and with larger metal sculptures. West represented Austria at the Biennale of Venice in 1988, 1993, 1997 and 2003. He was invited to Documenta IX (1992) and Documenta X (1997) and to ‘Skulptur Projekte’ 1997 in Munster. In Austria, he received the ‘Otto Mauer prize’ in 1986 and the ‘Wolfgang Hahn prize’ in 1998. In 2011, West received the ‘Golden Lion’ at the Venice Biennale for Lifetime Achievement. West lives and works in Vienna.
