Els Vanden Meersch

Els Vanden Meersch lives and works in Belgium, Antwerp. She studied visual arts at the Sint-Lukas Hogeschool Brussels, was a post-graduate of the Higher Institute of Visual Arts, Antwerp, and was in residence the Rijksakademie voor Beeldende Kunst (2001-2002), Amsterdam, Triangle artist association, NY (2006) and Platform Garanti, Istanbul (upcoming 2007).

Her work consists of (site specific) installations and photography, in which she explores the psychological structures of architecture and how this defines the position of the individual and its self-image. She published 3 photo books:  Transient constructions, a selection of my photo archive from 1996-2003 (Genk Flacc, 2003), Paranoid Obstructions (Leuven University Press, 2004) with the Lieven Gevaert Research Centre for Photography and Visual Studies and Implants (Mer, paper kunsthalle, 2006). Central theme in Implants is the memory of architecture. An upcoming publication ‘Hosgeldiniz-Welcome’ shows her extensive database of the ghost villages in Southeast of Turkey.

Solo exhibitions, among other, in De Brakke Grond, Amsterdam (2004), Vander Kelen museum, Leuven (2006), gallery Annie Gentils, Antwerp (2006/2008/2011) and La Chambre Blanche, La Biennale en art actuel de Quebec, Cananda (2008). Group exhibitions are, a.o, ‘Vérité exposée’ Ernst Museum Budapest (2009), ‘The order of things’ MUHKA Antwerp (2008), Biennial of contemporary art, Sinop, Turkey (2010)
