Driessens & Verstappen

Erwin Driessens (1963) and Maria Verstappen (1964), a Dutch art duo, have been working together since the early 90s. They create sculptures and installations (sometimes in situ) that often return to the classic distinction between nature and culture, while taking into account the current biological and technological context. Their work is exhibited worldwide in both solo and group exhibitions.

The exhibition Alter Nature: We Can (21.11.2010-13.03.2011) will play host to their work ‘Morphotheque #9’, a collection of 32 artificial carrots, the shapes of which are based on carrots that were rejected in distribution centres. With these pieces, the artists aim to highlight the process of continual artificial selection and cultivation in terms of form. They thus represent a critical reflection of the human urge for perfection, purification and uniformity.
