Antti Laitinen

Antti Laitinen (1975) is a Finnish artist who has worked in the medium of performance since the late 90s. His works are cultural metaphors for contemporary issues, in many cases depicting fundamental problems of Finnish identity and cultural imagery. As in ‘It’s my Island’, which will be on show during the exhibition Alter Nature: We Can (21.11.2010-13.03.2011), his work often represents a documented lifestyle experiment in which the different stages of composition are as much a part of the work as the end result.

‘It’s my Island’ consists of six photos and three videos, which show the result and the composition of the work respectively. As the title suggests, Laitinen builds his own island, in the Baltic Sea. And, like Hans Op de Beeck’s ‘Secret Garden’, this piece, too, refers to the idea of relocating nature in order to create our own piece of paradise – albeit with a touch of absurdity.
